SkillsPULSE explores new signals to detect emerging skill shortages across Europe
On Tuesday, 4 June 2025, the SkillsPULSE project held a research seminar under the title: “Skills signals: leveraging online job vacancies and big data to identify skills shortages and gaps”, in collaboration with the Committee for Labour and Social Policy of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
The event took place in hybrid format at the Faculty of Economics and Sociology, University of Lodz (Poland), and brought together researchers and stakeholders interested in labour market intelligence and data-driven policy design.
The main aim of the seminar was to explore how online job vacancies and other big data sources can be used to detect emerging skills needs, shortages, and mismatches in European labour markets. The sessions focused on early-warning tools that anticipate demand for new skills — long before traditional indicators are able to capture them.
The seminar featured presentations on:
- “Revelio/LinkedIn data and the possibilities it offers to analyse skills shortages & gaps”, and
“Skill demand in the age of AI: Evidence from Europe”, from SkiLMeeT project - “Occupational skill profiling in software engineering: Diversity analysis and machine learning-based prioritization”, from SKILLAB project
- “Skill change, mismatch and training: Evidence from online job vacancy data”, from TRAILS project
- “Identification of skill gaps and shortages – a SkillsPULSE approach”
The event ended with a panel discussion with Polish stakeholders.
Many thanks to all the participants for such an inspiring seminar!
