20th FGB Knowledge Apero: “One number, many stories: What do composite indicators reveal and conceal?”

Our coordinator, Fondazione Giacomo Brodolini, is hosting the 20th Knowledge Apéro “One number, many stories: What do composite indicators reveal and conceal?”, an informal after-work gathering with invited guests, discussion and a glass of wine in Brussels, on 13 October,18:00-20:00 CET.
Composite indicators help simplify complex issues into a single score or ranking. But in doing so, they can also hide important differences, assumptions and uncertainties.
This Knowledge Apero will bring together three perspectives: the European Skills Deficiencies Index, developed under SkillsPULSE project, the methodological expertise of the JRC Competence Centre on Composite Indicators and Scoreboards, and the policy perspective of DG RTD.
The discussion will focus on how composite indicators are built, interpreted and used in policy. What do we gain from summarising complex information in one number? What might we lose? And how can we make sure these indicators remain useful without oversimplifying the reality behind them?
